As a micro-business you’re most likely time poor and cash-strapped, so spending substantial time and money on marketing pursuits may seem a distant dream right now. Well hold on there horsey, there are a number of ways you can get attention for nothing.
Guerrilla, or experiential, marketing uses something slightly out of the ordinary to attract attention to your business. For example PR stunts, sticker bombing, flash mobs etc.
Here are my three top tips on how to come up with the best idea and how to get it out there to gain publicity for your biz:
- Is there something topical happening at the moment you can jump on the bandwagon with? How about a celebrity baby you can create a little outfit for and post online, encouraging people to share for example?
- Are you a local based business, have you handed out flyers near your business hoping to attract new customers? How about if you’re a health/sports related industry hand out bananas…and invite a local journalist down to take a couple of shots?
- Brainstorm – get some mates, family, partner together and say you’d like to do something on the cheap to capture the attention of the public, get a flip chart out, maybe get a couple of drinkies in, mines a dirty martini ;0), and encourage any idea, no matter how silly it sounds at the time. We had a brainstorm at a PR agency I worked in once and came up with loads of ideas for a high profile client including hosting the first live public birth and covering an elephant in diamantes, anything is possible so let your imaginations go wild!
So there you go. Fun and silly ways to engage your customers and future customers and maybe also getting some media coverage out of it too if you’re clever!
Also, have a look at this little clip from Diet Coke. Slightly embarrassing admission here, but I’m not sure if this is a gimmick or a real thing but happy for you to tell me below!!
