So I just read Steven Pressfield’s book Turning Pro, thanks Marie Forleo for introducing me to him. Have you ever read a book which is just so relevant to your life at that instant? Since moving to the lovely little town of Adelaide I’ve been contracting in various marketing roles. I’ve worked at BAE Systems to the Red Cross, national PR agencies to small bespoke mining recruiters and I’ve been really excellent at getting distracted. Ooo is that a bird? So I’d like to now admit something publicly. I suffer from Shiny Object Syndrome. I’m a dabbler. I’m a dawdler. I don’t commit. I’m always on the lookout for something just a little bit better.
According to Steven’s book, these are all symptoms we have when we’re trying to avoid the obvious. Our one true passion, our life’s work, what we were put on this planet to achieve in our short little life spans. Not focussing on one thing gives us the opportunity to put some effort into things but not 100%, so when something does go wrong, doesn’t work out the way you like or fails, you can just say,’ oh well, I didn’t put my all in’ and move onto the next fad.
Well, to me this is all a bit of a revelation, it will seem obvious to some (namely my husband!!), but at this stage of my life I do want to focus, I do want to start my own business advising entrepreneurs on how to achieve awesome media coverage. And that’s what I’m going to do, until I’m completely awesome at it.
So I’m leaving my learning days, my youth and my ‘amateur days’ as Steven calls them, behind and I’m focussing on one thing. Publicity for entrepreneurs. That’s it. It’s simple, it’s not diluting things, it’s giving my clients who run the most amazing businesses the chance to compete against the big boys, get one over their competitors and differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive world, by using my expertise to leverage publicity for them. And two months down the track and I’m killing it!!
So I’ll put away my fire poi, cheerleading poms, half-finished knitting and painting projects, travel aspirations, renno plans, other business ideas and focus, as that is where true excellence lies. Tell me about a life changing book you have read as my bedside table is now bare!
Ooo is that a shiny object over there… ;0)
